Home Kansas Education System

Kansas government invests significant amounts of funds into education - both into the primary and secondary school levels. The Kansas Board of Regents supervises the state's public colleges and universities.

Education in Kansas is among the best in the country. Due to high standards of public schools, as well as the variety of private schools available, people have wide range of choice when it comes to their childrens education.

In Kansas, the Early Learning Guidelines help to assist adults to get children ready for school even in the years before primary education begins. For pre-schoolers, these guidelines offer benchmarks for development that help to assist caregivers. One of such benchmarks is whether a child uses some pronouns such as you, she, and we in his conversations. This usage could help to determine whether a child is ready for kindergarten or he needs additional programs or attention. A gross motor skill benchmark example determines whether a child can run swiftly, around obstacles and a fine motor skill benchmark shows whether a child can hold a pencil or crayon with a tripod grasp thumb and first two fingers.

Another bonus for education and educators in Kansas is the Kansas Education Resource Centre. This centre lists the standards for education at each grade level and explains programs such as the Kansas Safe and Supportive Schools. Test examples are available for parents and teachers, and Thinkfinity offers over 50,000 educational resources. There are even training modules available for staff development.

In terms of private education in the state of Kansas, there are many schools available. Open Door Christian School is such an option, and this educational institution is located in Kansas City itself. Here, education is about character development as well as academic development. This school has a top rating nationally in reading and math.

Another private institution in Kansas is St. Johns Military School. It is located in Salina, Kansas and focuses its educational programs on moral character and leadership as well as academics. This institution won the Parents Choice, Private School award in 2009, as well as many other recognizable awards.

The Kansas Board of Regents controls, governs and supervises more than 30 various public institutions. It also authorizes a great number of private and out-of-state institutions giving them opportunity to operate in the state. About 100,000 students have been studying in Fall 2009 at the state's six public universities - more than a quarter of them were non-residents and more than a seventh were off-campus enrollments.

The University of Kansas is the largest among the state-funded universities, about 26,000 students at its Lawrence campus, KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park, and Public Management Center in Topeka (also known as the Capitol Complex). The total university enrollment, which includes Kansas University Medical Center, was even more than 30,000 having 31% of non-resident students.

Kansas State University at the moment has the second largest enrollment, with about 24,000 students at its Manhattan and Salina campuses and the Veterinary Medical Center having about 19% of non-resident students. The third place here goes to Wichita State University with about 15,000 students; about 14% of them are non-resident students. After them go Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University, and Emporia State University which are smaller public universities with total of about 11,000, 7,000, and 6,000 students, respectively.
